Ed obviously wrote A Princess of Mars with a sequel in mind, having left the plot wide open and unfinished with John Carter protestingly marooned back on Earth
The Gods of Mars was written in 1912, less than a year after the completion (and sale) of Princess.
In the intervening time, Ed wrote two other gems - The Outlaw of Torn, and a flight of fancy named Tarzan of the Apes. Tarzan was to prove Ed's gold mine and annuity.
In this novel of Barsoom, John Carter takes on a world's religion as we learn much more about a Barsoomian's "final pilgrimage" down the River Iss to the Valley Dor. Along the way we meet old friends and new - and one of Ed's nastiest female villains - Phaidor, daughter of Matai Shang, Father of Therns.
